Southeast Volusia Historical Society - Pancakes in the Park

Posted on November 26th, 2008

Old Fort Park, between Sams Ave and Riverside Drive in New Smyrna Beach, was the site, on Saturday, November 8th for Pancakes in the Park. This event is held a couple of times a year to raise funds for the Southeast Volusia Historical Society and New Smyrna Museum of History. The weather was outstanding and, I’m sure, that helped contribute to the large turnout. Tickets were only $5 and were available at the event as well as in advance at the New Smyrna Museum of History at 120 Sams Ave. I can attest to the fact that those in attendance enjoyed some great tasting homemade pancakes, sausage, and juice or coffee. Entertainment included live blue grass, a Civil War re-enactment, and classic cars on display. There were also vendors on-hand selling history oriented works of art and literature.

If you haven’t already done so, visit the New Smyrna Museum of History; you won’t regret it. By the way, the Southeast Volusia Historical Society and New Smyrna Museum of History were responsible for producing the Founders’ Day celebration back in September, which marked the settlement’s 240th anniversary.

Veterans Honored in Ceremony at Sea Pines Memorial Gardens

Posted on November 18th, 2008

Sea Pines Memorial Gardens in Edgewater was the site of a ceremony honoring all past and present members of the United States Armed Forces. There was a large crowd in attendance for this observance of Veterans Day. Representatives from various levels of government, veterans groups, and the clergy, were also in attendance.
Several moving and heartfelt speeches were given, poems read and prayers offered, all to honor the brave individuals who stepped forward when they were ask to serve their country, and to defend the freedom of their fellow citizens.
These individuals served unflinchingly even when life and limb were threatened. Some endured hardships beyond belief, and some paid the ultimate price. The burden placed upon the families of these brave souls often goes without mention.
What we offer these individuals in the way of gratitude and praise, no matter how stirring the ceremony, unfortunately, falls short. What we owe these men and women, who bravely served our nation, most assuredly, cannot be repaid this easily. May God bless you all!

18th Annual Flamingo Follies

Posted on November 17th, 2008

The 18th annual Flamingo Follies was held Saturday and Sunday, November 8th & 9thand once again provided an excellent opportunity to pick up varied and unusual holiday gifts for friends and family. Artist and artisans from all over set up shop on Historic Flagler Avenue to display their wares in what I can only describe as a bustling open-air marketplace. The weather fully cooperated, making it a delightful setting in which to while away a few hours window-shopping, and yes, there were actually windows there to buy! Check out the accompanying photos; perhaps you’ll get a sense of festive atmosphere that engulfed Flagler Avenue for two days.
While the Follies are over for now, you’ll still have a few more opportunities to pick up those unusual, artistic gifts that will abound at the events held on Canal Street and Flagler Avenue over the next few weeks. Check the ads for these upcoming events in The Observer and also listed on the event calendars in the Yes2LocalNews entertainment section.
And, for goodness sake, don’t miss the Flamingo Follies next time. It is a great pre-holidays event.

Rotary Club of Edgewater ~ MEADOW BINGO 2008

Posted on November 5th, 2008

On Sunday, October 26th, the Rotary Club of Edgewater held another Meadow Bingo Fundraiser at Sandspur Riding Club in New Smyrna Beach.  The club was challenged this year by a few days of rain and a lot of muddy grounds, but on Sunday the riding club was dried out  and the event was attended by about 400 people.  The club added a dunk tank and two Corn Hole games to the usual activities.  Everyone enjoyed the perfect autumn day on Sunday afternoon with a great barbeque provided by Bridgeton Deli and refreshments from Big B Liquors.  Cash prizes were given out by random drawing throughout the afternoon as the crowd waited for the five bulls to make their deposits in the arena.  For the first time ever, they did not cooperate, so six people’s numbers were drawn for $1,000 each as the grand prizes. Over $10,000 was returned to the attendees by drawings, 50/50 raffles and awards for the other games.
All profit from the event stays in the community as the Rotary Club supports many local charities throughout Volusia County.  College scholarships are awarded to NSBHS graduates, local area Boy and Girl Scout troops, Rotary Park and Children’s Medical Services are supported by the Rotarians.  Rotary is dedicated to the eradication of Polio and has been working toward that goal since 1985 with donations from Rotarians, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the CDC, WHO and many other organizations throughout the world.
Please call 386-409-0222 for any additional questions about Edgewater Rotary and The Cadillac of Parties, which will be held in the Spring of 2009.
