The Kiwinas Club of New Smyrna Beach hosted their semi-annual “Strike It Rich” party on May 22st at the Brannon Center in New Smyrna. They sell 400 tickets to this event for a charge of $125 which admits two people. With over $18,000 in prize money, there is also food, dancing, open bar, and open buffet. The event, which is scheduled from 6pm until 10pm, lasted longer than planned due to the fun and dancing and actually ended around 10:40. The Kiwinas netted approximately $11,000, all of which will be dispersed back to the community. So far this year the organization has given over $10,000 to teachers for special projects that are not funded by the state. Without the help of the Kiwinas, the teachers would have to provide funds for these projects out of their own pockets. The Kiwinas also contribute to community organizations such as PAL and the YMCA. Kiwanis motto is “Serving the Children of the World” and the NSB club’s focus is “Serving the Children of Southeast Volusia County”. If anyone is interested in becoming a member they can contact Pat Reid at 386-409-9300 or by email at preid@federaltrust.com. They can also visit their website at www.nsbkiwanis.com.

Tens of thousands of art enthusiasts, the talent of over 250 fine artists from around the country, and incredible music combined for a spectacular 34th annual IMAGES: A Festival of the Arts this weekend. Presented by Atlantic Center for the Arts, the festival is sponsored by the County of Volusia, the City of New Smyrna Beach, the Southeast Volusia Advertising Authority, the Community Redevelopment Agency of New Smyrna Beach, Riverside National Bank, and BrightHouse Networks.
Over $100,000 in Patrons Awards and cash prizes were given. Festival awards were given in six areas by jurors Leslie King-Hammond and Ben Thompson.
“It is always a rare and humble honor to be asked by different art communities to come in and jury a festival. The work at the IMAGES extravaganza was rich with diversity, technique, intellect, and exceptional artistry. Jurying is a labor of love, hard work, but richly rewarding, and I feel very honored to have been part of this process,” said Leslie King Hammond.
“Judging IMAGES was an exhausting but wonderful experience,” said Ben Thompson. “I was really pleased with the quality and diversity of work represented, and impressed by the support of the festival locally and regionally. We chose based on the artists themselves, and their body of work, so the awards are not for individual work, but for the artists. I think the artists will be pleasantly surprised.” ** Photos by Sandi Carroll **

NEW SMYRNA BEACH & PORT ORANGE – The haze cleared with just enough time for band members, cheerleaders, dancers, entertainers, Santa Claus, and others to make their way down Flagler Avenue, the North Causeway, Riverside Drive, and Canal Street.
At dusk, the temperatures had dropped well below the average mid-70s, and gave way to a more “wintery” atmosphere. The Annual New Smyrna Beach Christmas Parade ushered in the holidays will a much anticipated jingle jangle. Men, women, children, and pets alike lined both sides of the parade route in hopes for holiday cheer, and of course, candy. Click Here to read more from the Observer By Nancy Davis

The time and season is now for the Canal Street Historic District! Christmas on Canal Street organizers have joined together to create an annual series of events that will restore the Canal Street Historic District as a consumer destination and to restore relationships through shared success.
With a growing team of talented leaders and Ambassadors of Canal Street the vision is soon to become reality.
On Friday night, November 27 2009 at 6pm a tree lighting ceremony, store front display judging, live entertainment and horse drawn carriage rides will kick off a new chapter in this storybook life by the sea.
What would a holiday season be without an opportunity to decorate home or office with greenery, flowers and other accoutrements to shepherd in the season? Join the Coastal Christmas Market and weekly Farmers Market in Canal Street, Saturday Nov. 28 from 9-5. Make a day of it, share it with out of town guests who will enjoy a stay on our beach or in one of our area’s lovely Bed and Breakfast Inns.
Enjoy a morning carriage ride through the entire district. Listen to the musical and theatrical performers. Visit Santa in his renovated North Pole Annex in Christmas Park at the corner of Canal and Live Oak Streets. Look for Santa sightings in area stores.
Eat in one of the growing number of restaurants, Jason’s on the corner, Malony’s, Golden Biscuit, El Palenque, Dolphin View, Lil Neal’s and Ruthy’s Kozy Kitchen. Enjoy something sumptuous from Love Muffin Bakery, then take a tour with the re-characterization of Hannah Bonnet, our first woman Mayor and learn more intriguing local lore from Captain Richard Sturge.
Take time to visit our FREE Museum and enjoy this historical treasure.
The Coastal Market will also be an opportunity to support local charities and schools, buy arts and crafts items for the Holidays Live entertainment and children activities will take place during the day. The Coastal Market is a perfect opportunity to stay local and shop local. Like the saying goes if you don’t use it, you will lose it.
Stressed out? Take a mini vacation with a mini massage. Children will enjoy making a special purchase from Secret Santa’s Shop along with live entertainment. Take your holiday greeting card photos in Christmas Park in front of the new mural backdrop The Coastal Market, a place where everyone can have fun.
An evening affair will occur on Dec 2 with Girls Night Out. Enjoy the fashions of the Canal Street Historic District. Models from Premier Modeling will show you what’s new for you. After dining, take a stroll on the Canal Street promenade; look for the winners of the Window Display contest. Take a ride in an antique vintage car.
Who doesn’t love a parade? December 5 the annual city parade will start on Flagler Avenue at 4pm, and brighten the faces of children of all ages along Canal Street. At dusk the annual Boat Parade starts in Edgewater, traveling North around “Chicken Island” and back to Riverside Park for the judges‘ results.
Bring your lawn chair, call ahead for a takeout dinner and settle in for the Caroling Event on Dec 10, 6pm. Hear the voices and the instruments that ring in the reason for the season. See St. Paul’s Episcopal Church’s living Nativity pageant.
December 13 from 2 - 4pm, the historic district Bed and Breakfasts owners are extending a free tour and taste. Visit these beautiful properties and encourage visitors to enjoy the respite of a B and B or any of our area lodgings.
There will be a certain brilliance and joyful sounds on Canal Street this year and it is only the beginning. Join the fun while making tomorrow’s memories.
