Outdoor enthusiasts and art lovers will have the opportunity to come together in support of a good cause Nov. 8-13 at Canaveral National Seashore in New Smyrna Beach.
The inaugural “Canaveral Seashore Paint Out,” hosted by the Friends of Canaveral, will celebrate the 35th anniversary of Canaveral National Seashore and raise funds for a multi-year project to build and maintain a children’s “Interactive Environmental Learning Center” in the park.
About 30 talented landscape artists will set up their easels and pull out their brushes to document the landscape and culture of the seashore and surrounding areas. The artists will be creating one-of-a-kind paintings en plein air (outdoors) at locations at the Eldora House, the Schultz Leeper house, Castle Windy, Turtle Mound, and other picturesque sites in the park.
On Nov 9 and 10, the artists will also have the opportunity to paint at various locations in New Smyrna Beach, such as historic Canal Street, charming Flagler Avenue, Old Fort Park, the City Marina, Riverside Park, and the pristine Spruce Creek Preserve, next to the 69-acre tidal estuary site of Atlantic Center for the Arts. New Smyrna Beach is listed in John Villani’s book “The 100 Best Small Art Towns in America.”
A selection of Florida’s finest plein air artists will be participating, including Steve Andrews, Trish Beckham, Cathy Berse, Linda Blondheim, Thom Buttner, Christophe Cardot, Peter Carolin, Grayson Conroy, Charles Dickinson, Cynthia Edmonds, Mary Erickson, Sally Evans, Elisabeth Ferber, Jane Gayman, Elaine Hahn, Scott Hiestand, Brenda Hofreiter, Stewart Jones, Mitch Kolbe, Sterling Mulbry, Berto Ortega, Barbara Perrotti, Peter Pettegrew, Morgan Samuel Price, Gene Rantz, Tom Sadler, Val Sandell, Jacqueline Schindehette, Robert Simone, Trish Vevera, and Mary Jane Volkmann.
Throughout the six-day event there will be many opportunities to enjoy the seashore and to be a part of the art that is created. Visitors can talk to the artists as they paint unique works of art at the many picturesque locations.
The artists will be painting from dawn to dusk Nov. 8-12 during the Paint Out and all of the works created will be for sale. As the paintings are completed, they will be hung in an on-site “wet room gallery” (open 9 a.m-5:30 p.m.) at Canaveral Seashore for immediate sale. There will be additional opportunities for art lovers and patrons to view and purchase paintings completed each day during special sponsored or ticketed evening events.
The public is invited to a preview event at Clay Gallery, located at the corner of Riverside Drive and Douglas Street, downtown New Smyrna Beach, from 4-8 p.m. Oct. 2, during the monthly Gallery Walk. Some of the plein air artists will be painting on the gallery’s lush tropical grounds and the evening’s donations for wine and beverages will be donated to the Friends of Canaveral for the Interactive Environmental Learning Center.
The public is also invited to a “Meet the Artists” wine and cheese reception at 7 p.m. Wed, Nov. 10 at Arts on Douglas, 123 Douglas St., New Smyrna Beach. Plein Air paintings produced by the artists the first three days of the Paint Out will be on display and for sale.
From 3-7 p.m. Thursday Nov. 11, a “Sunset Paint In” will be held at J.B.’s Fish Camp,, 859 Pompano Ave. (off of A1A), New Smyrna Beach. Enjoy a beverage or appetizer as you watch the artists paint a beautiful sunset at the quaint “Old Cracker” restaurant.
The Patrons’ Gala will be held at Eldora State House at 7 pm. Friday, Nov. 12. There will be music by Ray Guiser, food and beverages. Paintings produced during the week will be on sale and artist commissions can be booked. Tickets are $25 in advance, $35 at door; and free to patrons at $150 sponsorship level and above.
The event will culminate in the “Community Quick Draw and Family Fun Day” at Canaveral National Seashore from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 13. There will be music and free “Paint It” and Junior Ranger activities for children and food will available for purchase. The public is invited to bring an easel and paint along with the pros and to compete for three cash prizes. The first prize winner will have the chance to have his painting printed on the 2010 T-shirts for Canaveral Seashore Volunteers. The entry fee is $10 (artists bring their own supplies) and advance registration is required by emailing friendsofcanaveral@gmail.com or leslie@whybeadnormal.com.
Patron and sponsorship opportunities are available for this worthy cause. For more information about the Canaveral Seashore Paint Out, visit http://www.canaveralseashorepaintout.org, http://www.friendsofcanaveral.org, or call Pat Skrtic at 386-426-6151.

Rose Cottage Bed & Breakfast somewhere on the East Coast of the U. S.

Mrs. Stancliffe’s Rose Cottage Bed & Breakfast has been successful for many years. Her guests (nearly all women) return year after year. Her next door neighbor, the elderly, silver-tongued, Bud “Bud the Stud” Davis believes they come to spend time with him in romantic liaisons. The prim and proper Mrs. Stancliffe steadfastly denies this, but really doesn’t do anything to prevent it, and reluctantly accepts the fact that “Bud the Stud” is, in fact, good for business. Her other neighbor and would-be suitor, Henry Mitchell, is a retired chemist who has developed a blue pill called “Venusia,” after Venus (the goddess of love) to increase the Read the rest of this entry »

The Little Theatre is pleased to announce the opening of its Summer 2010 Show, ?Cash On Delivery?, on July 30, 2010. ‘Cash’ is a British farce by Michael Cooney, and is directed by Patti Earl.

This fast paced yarn for the live stage concerns Eric, a self-styled con artist, who lost his job two years ago, and is hiding the fact that he has been defrauding the welfare authorities with every possible trick while collecting thousands in welfare payments. One day Jenkins, a government employee, comes by to check up on how all these benefits can be paid to the same address. And then other government employees begin to show up.
Eric creates stories for his wife, the government workers and enlists help from his upstairs lodger, Norman, and his Uncle George to participate in his deceptions. There is a scene stealing cross dresser, a dead body, and mistaken identities? all the ingredients to guarantee one side splitting scene after another. But don’t get any ideas to try out yourself. Nabbed in the end, Eric confesses, and instead of jail time, he finds a job working for the government, because he knows all the tricks!
Reserved seating is available at the Little Theatre Box Office at 386-423-1246. Adults are $14. Seniors are $13 and Students under 18 are $7. The Box Office is open week-days from 1 until 4 p.m. and 2 hours prior to each performance. The show will be playing July 30, 31, August 1, 6, 7 and 8. Curtain opens at 8 p.m. sharp except Sundays, which are matinee performances at 2 p.m. More information is available at the Box Office or by visiting the Little Theatre online at www.NsbPlayers.org.

This year Summer Camp was at WonderLand Theatre for 32 young thespians. There were two camps for the young actors, depending on their ages. Camp One was a two-week camp for ages 7-12. Camp Two was for one week for ages 4-6.
Attendees in Camp One rehearsed for their on-stage performance of GOONEY BIRD GREENE AND HER TRUE LIFE ADVENTURES where the summer had come to a crashing halt in the little town of Watertower. The kids didn’t want to be back in school - they were listless and bored. Suddenly, the classroom door flew open and there stood the pig-tailed Gooney Bird Greene sporting her new cowboy boots and dressed unlike anyone theyd ever seen before! Parents and friends attended the last two days of camp where attendees performed their well-rehearsed script all decked out in their own costumes, in their own make-up and on their own set, which were all individual camp projects where they learned the skills of acting and crewing in live theatre tradition.
Camp Two attendees, the younger set of campers, learned about bears in BEARS AND MORE BEARS, through the use of stories and exploring this animal of the wilderness through creative games, role playing, songs and poetry. The last day of camp featured a show and tell program presented for parents and friends. Some of the adults got into the act with the young thespians, creating a live bear-cave as a prop for their aspiring actors to use in their story-telling.

The Kiwinas Club of New Smyrna Beach hosted their semi-annual “Strike It Rich” party on May 22st at the Brannon Center in New Smyrna. They sell 400 tickets to this event for a charge of $125 which admits two people. With over $18,000 in prize money, there is also food, dancing, open bar, and open buffet. The event, which is scheduled from 6pm until 10pm, lasted longer than planned due to the fun and dancing and actually ended around 10:40. The Kiwinas netted approximately $11,000, all of which will be dispersed back to the community. So far this year the organization has given over $10,000 to teachers for special projects that are not funded by the state. Without the help of the Kiwinas, the teachers would have to provide funds for these projects out of their own pockets. The Kiwinas also contribute to community organizations such as PAL and the YMCA. Kiwanis motto is “Serving the Children of the World” and the NSB club’s focus is “Serving the Children of Southeast Volusia County”. If anyone is interested in becoming a member they can contact Pat Reid at 386-409-9300 or by email at preid@federaltrust.com. They can also visit their website at www.nsbkiwanis.com.
